Years ago the fields surrounding our town provided most of its food. This sensible arrangement has changed so that now what the farmers produce gets trucked away.
In an attempt to make more truly local food available we have formed ‘Shaftesbury Home Grown’. We have been inspired by the drive to be more self-sufficient in food at the Wiltshire village of Martin and also encouraged by the Transition Town movement that looks beyond our present period of cheap oil.
We want to produce local food to sell to local people whilst keeping the input of oil and chemicals low. We now have access to some land near St James and are gathering a group to support the scheme and a small community of the willing to help with the growing. There is much work to be done and help would be welcomed.
